I don't think that concept works when one has a whole litter, and they all start vying for attention.
One can't keep them all.
I have a theory that domestic kittens have a strong maternal bond. However, somewhere around 2 to 3 months the mothers begin to wean the kittens, and they turn to the human companions that provide food, water, and social interaction.
When I was given some feral kittens to foster a couple of years ago, it was extraordinary how quickly they transitioned from feral to bonding with humans.
