I did it once and found it to be a nightmare.

Lot's of people ride the BNY on road bikes with no problems.
The only "iffy" part I remember from the last couple of years (other than a stray pothole) was parts of the Queens and Brooklynn waterfronts. A few cobble stones and some broken pavement, and a birdge or two, but not too bad. Like any city riding, stay alert and watch for hazzards.
1" road tires would be 'bout as skinny as you would want.
