You're the first person who posted a thread where someone actually hid a bicycle and had it stolen. I use this technique all the time with a Kryptonite U-Lock 2000 and my bike was never stolen. I happen to think most bike theft occurs on bike racks and you'll see them every now and then. I still recommend hiding the bike but using a good industrial lock from Kryptonite. You don't have to use the New York Chain or Krytonite 3000 unless you're brave enough to park on a bike rack.
In fact, the only time I would use the New York 3000 was when I would leave it at a train station each day. That lock had battle scars from all the crooks who tried to cut it but couldn't. I still would not travel with this lock because it is so heavy which is why I would use the Kryptonite 2000 and hide the bike.
