I typically only lock up with one of those cheap little locks we all had as kids, the ones with the four thumbwheel combination locks. More of a dickhead repeller than a theft preventer. Biff and Muffy are typically driving around in $40K SUV, wouldn't be caught dead exerting themselves on a bike.
My situation exactly. I have left my bike just leaning against the wall when going into stores in town often, and nobody's ever bothered it. Even just sitting next to the bench outside Home Depot for half an hour, no problems. I did finally buy one of those locks like you said, for $5 at a grocery store, it's small enough to carry around but I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

The master lock pit stop lock mentioned earlier is actually more like what I was looking for. I might buy one if I find one someplace I'm already ordering from; looks lighter than the cheapo I've got now.
