What's snow?
JK. One nice thing about the best coast, in most places, (here included), you only need to drive an hour from the coast to have a snow day with the family during the winter. San Diego doesn't have ski resorts (like LA county), but our mountains do get snow when there is rain in town during winter.
One specific range (the Lagunas) are my happy place to go car camping and MTB'ing during the warmer months. We have gone several times per year for the last 10 years. It is a lovely mountain ecosystem with a network of meadow/pastures within evergreen forests. There are also major (3,000') road and trail climbs down into the chaparral scrub as well, if that's what you want on a day. With any luck, we'll get Liliana up there nearing her first birthday
