Long ago I had some of the "cookie" types. When I had the sport boat, I arrived one day to find them both inflated due to water coming in through the mast step (it was a "wet" boat).
They would deteriorate in damp conditions or dissolve from a splash and pop at exactly the wrong time. The hydrostatic release was a big improvement, but they're expensive and the re-arm kit comes with the whole thing.
