My working theory is that I pushed the pistons in too far using a plastic tire iron. During a thorough cleaning a while back I repeatedly pulled the levers on empty calipers (The first time was ignorance and the second time stupidity) and had to reset the pistons, and I bet I levered them in too far...instead of just flush.
