I moved the pistons too far the first try, then about 1 mm on second. This resulted in reasonable improvement, and I'm calling it done. I'm sure I could dial it in a bit better. My working theory is that I pushed the pistons in too far using a plastic tire iron. During a thorough cleaning a while back I repeatedly pulled the levers on empty calipers (The first time was ignorance and the second time stupidity) and had to reset the pistons, and I bet I levered them in too far...instead of just flush.
But they should self-adjust from the fully retracted position after a few cycles, as long as there's enough fluid in the system and the pistons are moving freely.
