I'm a descending wuss, too, but there are several descents where I feel reasonably secure but am spun out and don't bother trying to pedal. Even when getting as aero as I can one of my friends will roll away from me but he is 40 pounds heavier and more aero than I am.
Is he shorter than you?
On the Monthly C&V rides, I tend to take point, and I always find myself 100 yards ahead at the bottom of the 1/4-1/2 mile dropoffs on the route. I don't know if everyone else is braking, or what.
