Going back to what I said about old cars not having been built to last 50 or 60 years, I'd contrast that with watches, which were built to last for decades. The forces are a lot smaller, the tolerances are tighter, and they're not as exposed to the elements, but the same things that make them more accurate also make them last longer. They also don't deteriorate as much from lack of use.
