I didn’t have a washer that would fit behind the brake. So I drilled out the threads on a valve nut.
It’s not a permanent fix. I believe a permanent “fix” would be to add 1 or 2 of the knurled washers that came with the caliper.
The spacer I added extended the brake maybe 1.5mm. Geometry being what it is, this added significantly more clearance and I ended up moving the brake pads down further than I expected.
We’re not talking fender territory but there’s daylight now.
This eliminates the argument that extending the caliper would further reduce the clearance. It’s hard to eyeball that, turning the wrench is more enlightening than arguing.
As for how the fork crown connects to the steerer tube. I honestly can’t tell. It all looks square to me. Maybe the fork blades are angled out of the crown a little bit forward.
Presta locknuts are handy for spacing 5 mm fasteners, they wouldn't be my first choice for 6 mm. But you did it, it works, no need for further discussion. 😄
FWIW I think the fork blades are sitting in the crown at an angle.
