That's a relatively affordable problem to solve with an adapter like this:

I think you would only need one - between a stoker and captain seatposts, and then you turn the front wheel 90 degrees and take off your back wheel. That will get your bike (hung on the hitch rack) within the car's rearview mirrors. Of course, measure before investing, but this is by far the easiest way to transport tandems.
