The extra length can be a plus as it will provide more strength below the seat lug for the further insertion.

You may need to clean the seat tube to get the post in, add some ATF, penetrant, etc and attach some Scotch Brite to a stiff wire or dowel to get down deep.

Of course you can cut it down but I would leave it plenty long, especially if you are any sort of a "big" man.
