Interesting comment. In the Garmin lineup I look at the “complicated” models as the 840/1040 and that have the performance and training functions. Where as the more basic Explore has none of that, yet they all do navigation. So you can spend $300 on an Edge Explore 2 and get most if not all the navigation functions of the $500 1040. Adding in all the performance/training functions as you increase in price.
I have a 530 and 1030 and they are awesome at capturing all the ride data... as far as navigation goes though they both suck but the 530 is clearly the superior unit. I recently had a conversation with a couple people in my riding club that refuse to use their Edges for navigation and say the Explore (unsure what model) is significantly better for navigation. They ride with both, Edge for data logging, Explore for nav.
