Question was raised about the wheelbase of the Sears ToteCycle. I just measured the wheelbase at 43.25 inches and that is with the rear wheel at the front of the dropouts. The distance from the center of BB to the rear axle center as it sits now is 18.75 inches.
This baby is way stetched out. It has a longer wheelbase and chainstay length than my Trek 520 or my son's Surly Long Haul Trucker - and both of these are long wheelbase touring bikes.
The rear dropouts look like cheap poor quality welds against cheap flattened mild steel tubes. If I were to get a wild-hair about doing any distance riding on this bike - I would definitely get one of my friends to "reinforce" the dropouts.
Without the basket - it weighs just under 27 pounds as a fixed gear- not too bad for an early 60's "gas-pipe" frame with built in luggage rack and steel long rise stem.
I don't see why college campus aren't just littered with these old small wheel folders. Most kids on campus only have short distances to ride and must manueuver through the crowds at class change time. These old folders are cheap, heavy duty, and have already stood the test of time by just being in rideable condition after 35-40 years of use.
