BTW, were some of these RDs rated only 34Tmax because that was all Shimano offered at the time? I see that an M771 was rated 34/45 whereas the M772 was rated 36/45.
Now to find a 10-speed cassette I am currently looking at a CS-HG50-10 11-36. Is this a good choice?
the 34 or 36 teeth is a function of the engineered ANGLE that the derailleur swings at... what i've found is that yes, a "34 teeth" rated Der. will shift onto a 36, but there's a chance of Noisy Operation,m depending on the FRONT Chainring size and how you have adjusted the B-screw on the Rear Derailleur...AND, i've had issue with shifting to a smaller gear in back, once the chain is shifted onto the Biggest cassette gear...
Another thing to look at is whether the Der. Cage hits the big gear when clicking into "1st".... the cage can rub the big gear, and be really reluctant to complete the shift...
dare i mention this... Shimano "Mega-Range" Rear Ders are able to shift well onto the 36 tooth gears with ease... there are some Alivio versions that may not draw too much ridicule.....

i had one build where i fought the Deore Der. for days... then tried an Alivio Mega-range.. it WORKED, Perfectly.
