It is simply not realistic to expect adequate braking power from the hoods of '70s era single-pivot calipers, IMO. Non-trivial braking requires at least the front braking hand on the drops. In my past experience, Universal Super 68 side-pulls with Ambrosio serrated rims was a good, linear combination.
