Hmm this sounds intriguing. Did you slit the tubing? Now that I'm thinking, I wonder if I could just buy some plastic tubing and slit it and open it into a V shape. That may make for a more natural shape, like what the "proper" Shimano product provides. May need to experiment with the diameter.
