I agree. Just take a spoke matching the broken one back to the 2nd shop. I wouldn't think $8 would make you an unworthy customer. They sell tubes for about the same price, not to mention Lookie Lous who don't buy anything. That's not to say shops want every customer but I think it would take more than what you've related to put you on their list.
