I couldn’t find a single dictionary source which limits “motor” exclusively to electricity. The term “electric motor” exists as a category of motor.
“Engine” on the other hand only applies to liquid fuel or steam, which is why you never hear the term “electric engine”.
So I would say your pet peeve is misguided.
Before posting, I looked on wiki for motor, and it only said electric.
