Otherwise, Competitive Cyclist and Excel Sports are decent. REI has some stuff if you have one locally, you can return there usually, with stuff bought online.

For shoes, see what you can find on return policies (eg. free returns). You'd probably be best served ordering 2-3 pairs to determine optimal fit. I'd suggest an LBS, but this will depend if they sell a brand you're interested in (most shops around here have 1-2 brands, and absolutely none of them seem to stock size 49s, so YMMV).
