I definitely could not have gone any bigger than 6 speed.
Which model of 6 speed freewheel did you go with? The only thing which puts me off with the Shimano freewheels is the big ugly white lettering on the big cog. For a classic bike, it doesn't quite look right. The Suntour ones seem to look better.
