That might be a good start for a simple, affordable 1x drivetrain. I don't have any experience with Sturmey Archer hubs. I have a pair sitting in the basement laced to 26" wheels waiting for me to do something with them. My impression of them is heavy but reliable.

Awesome! Thanks for the tip on Microshift! Looks like we could save some weight going to an aluminum cassette. I guess there's a risk of bending a cog, especially if inexperienced house guests take out the bikes.
And CrimsonEclipse, thanks for pointing out the 20" product line. From the product page, the largest cog it supports is 34-38T. I think I'd want to swap the chainring from the current 52T to something smaller then, or add a smaller one without a derailleur for those trips into the Alps.
More research needed. And yes, I'll post pictures once I grow up around here.
