I usually put the distance as 'km' if my audience isn't randonneurs. I think most randonneurs might think it's a little funny if it was in reference to a brevet.

Crista having a route near here was only part of the impetus for why I developed my perms. I used to have to drive 2 hours just to do a perm. Then someone got one approved an hour away, and I thought it was nice not to have to drive so far. Then a friend developed a very nice perm starting here, and I got it approved. So I ended up with 10 perms, I think. It's tricky to get that many around here without starting at a remote location or repeating myself. There was one I never rode myself after it was approved, although I rode it beforehand. Back in those days, it was a lot more work to ride someone else's perm, so owning my own was nice in that regard as well. I had a small group of people that rode my perms, which was validating.

My understanding is that it's easier to get a route approved for a RUSA/ACP brevet if it's already a perm.
