Even performance sports cars have mostly gone to manumatics (planetary gear automatic trans with electronic manual shifting) and dual-clutch (manual transmission with electronic manual and automatic shifting). So bikes are paralleling that trend, for different reasons.
If I bought a new bike, I'd want the frame to be capable of 1X, 2X, or 3X, in rear dropout spacing, and front chainline and derailleur mounting options. And capable of the widest tires I might want.
Some people like sailboats with the simplicity of one sail. Others like me, want at least two sails, I find it more interesting.
