I was considering immersion of the tubing in boiling water, but I doubt I'd get that much expansion. My micrometer shows a similar diameter of the spring. Trying to avoid dismantling 15 brakes on 8 bikes, I wanted to unlink the spring ends from the caliper arms while still on the bike. Kinda hard to get in there, but I took an old screwdriver and dremelled a notch in the end to make the tip U-shaped. Really helps, disengaged the spring in the matter of a second. So, back to the drawing board to slit the tubing, I presume with an X-acto knife.

FWIW, I pulled the calipers off of the frame to put the teflon sleeving on the springs. Not sure if it makes a big difference or not, but I think it resulted in less cursing overall.

For slitting the tubing, I used the little scissors on my swiss army knife. An xacto knife should work too, as long as you are careful and pay attention.

BTW, is there any sign of fixing the problem of not getting notified when you've been quoted and such? It's a bit frustrating to need to review threads that I've been active in.
