I did take one apart ,clean and oil it but the other one I could not get apart and probably broke. The bolt on the back would spin..I think there was a nut somewhere that was unseated. I'm not a fan of that design and all that plastic.
When you say modern is bad how modern; within 5 years, 10 or 15?
Ahhh, gotcha. Modern being bad probably 15 years or more. 7 speed came out in the late 80s so it got relegated further to the bottom as 8-9-10-11...came out. There is plenty of good stuff out there in older stuff. BikeRecyclery.com is a good place to look for that stuff. If you have a cassette hub you could go for a new chain and cassette and upgrade up to 9 speed and keep the derailleurs.
