Any doner of period manufacturing will likely need a cleaning and lubing before install. Part of this, and perhaps the most important part of the der WRT friction, is the pulleys. Removing them to clean and reassemble with fresh grease. This means that there's no need to cut and reattach the chain (unless it is also really grimy and you want to clean it too). I usually avoid breaking a chain when not needed. Andy
