As I recall, a match book cover is approximately .008 inches. Use that or a few, slipped between the ring and the stay to measure. Or use feeler gauges, if you have them. I might suggest that you do this in several crank ring positions, just to help ensure that the ring is straight and does not come too close.
so it's 1.2mm between the thinnest point from the large chainring and about 2.4mm from the end of the crank arm
