One test for a crack's presence is to clean up the area and apply a thin oil on one side and watch for bleed through to the other side. I believe there are specific dyes for this but I have just used a penetrating oil. Spray some inside the down tube and position the frame so the puddle of oil in the tube aligns with the suspect spot.
That’s a good idea. I’d suggest one of the colorful
Mio drink enhancers. (Available in the drink section at the grocery store.) A friend recently told me about using it to find a plumbing leak. I’d get one (color/flavor) that shows up well against the aluminum/paint scheme.
