I brought the rear wheel to my LBS to remove the freewheel. I was a little more than concerned that with a French hub and a French freewheel, I might be locked into a French threaded freewheel. But I had to get lucky sooner or later, the hub has English threads. My Shimano freewheel screwed right on. Nice to have options. I actually don't mind the gaps in a 5-speed freewheel. It's a comforting reminder of the Schwinn Varsity that I imprinted on in my youth. So I'm going to try and rebuild the Maillard freewheel, and if all works out, I might keep in the rotation.
