Bottom bracket was OK. Someone replaced one bearing cage...and not the other? Who does that? The old cage was loose and the bearings fell right out. I stuck the empty cage into my metal vise and gave the whole thing a little squeeze all at once. Bearings snapped back in nicely.
You're better off using loose balls in the bottom bracket. 11 1/4 inch bearings per side. Caged bearings have fewer balls and thus are not as durable than loose balls.
