and if one adds in all the house brands (contract builds) it gets into the thousands of names

IIRC the Merckx cycles are done to Italian standard so a BSC threaded shell would eliminate them

have never seen a lugless Merckx which certainly does not mean that none were ever produced

yes, serial placement and format can be helpful clues
