I am car-free (2 years now) and obnoxiously self-righteous about it! Seriously though, getting rid of my car was one of the best decisions I ever made.
People make all sorts of lifestyle choices, and if you prioritize not having a car, you can live in a place where you are able to structure a car-free life. I live downtown (Seattle) so I can bike everywhere, or take public transportation if I have to. When I do need a car for something, I use the car-sharing service (Flexcar). I am happy to give up some living space, and to pay more per square foot than I would if I didn't live downtown.
