Isn't there even a difference in pull ratio between Shimano Road and Mountain designated parts? If so, would a Road cassette still work with Mountain shifters? I assume the derailleur wouldn't matter.
No difference for 9 speed. 10 and up is where they diverge, though road 10 speed shifters are compatible with mountain 7-9 derailleurs but not mountain 10.
OP, the SRAM derailleur will not work. Get a Shimano Acera or similar.
