As I was riding today (2.5 hours, maybe 5 minutes in drops) I was pondering how hand position could be a source of confusion. I think of it as three general choices above and including the shifters, then the drops. Pretty simple. However, here's an article that discusses nine distinct positions! All that could seem overwhelming. I'd suggest not over thinking it. Move around the top of the bar instinctively and save the drops for when you need more control. I rarely see recreational riders JRA in the drops unless they have one of the old style bars. Finally, Mr Deason has observed that riders move their hands from the tops by the stem to the hoods when he approaches. I'd chalk this up to a unique perspective rather than something to be concerned about..
