There are some areas where others' experience won't get you very far. I can listen to my favorite song a million times, memorize the sheet music, and watch instructional videos. However, until I pick up a guitar, and go through the process of teaching my body the muscle movement patterns to play the notes in the correct order, at the correct time, for the correct duration, and at the correct volume, all that knowledge doesn't mean much. Then, there's the difference between an amateur and a pro. An amateur practices until they get it right. A pro practices until they never get it wrong.

I don't know how that relates to fixing bikes...but it's an interesting topic.
