About shoes - the needs of cycling (stiff platform) are at odds with the needs of walking (cushioning, flexibility). I've recently had good luck traveling and biking with hiking approach shoes plus flat pedals. They had enough flexibility for walking but weren't super-cushioned like a trail running shoe. For clipless, I prefer mountain bike shoes with smaller SPD or Eggbeater cleats and some tread around the cleat, even for the road. I think that I'm done with the clipclop of Look style cleats and shoes.
