Bike sizes on Older Bikes

I been sent several lists of bikes from FB and Craigslist on older bikes and visited some of the listings. I noticed that on the older road bikes(before 1990's) that 56 and 58 feels much shorter than when I get on a newer bike. I move the saddle high enough but I feel that I am more shifting more weight forward or getting back pains after 10 minutes of riding.. I also moved the saddle way back.

Now when I try a current medium bike (like Trek, Specialized, or even from WM) made within 5 years which is a 52 to 54 I don't have that struggle. I do have to move the saddle all the way back also.

I am 5'11 with inseam of 32.5

Is this common to the rest of you?
