So that was nerve-racking...
Tackled the bar tape job this morning. I wanted more padding than just the Brooks leather wrap, but I didn't want to put a whole under wrap of regular tape. I'm not fond of that baseball bat thick handlebar look (or feel).
When I redid my Schwinn Voyager, I found some of this snot-like gel stuff underneath. It was clear, gooey and sticky as heck. But although it easily stuck to itself, it just as easily separated. I was stunned that I was able to reuse it under the new tape. It feels really nice.
So during a visit as the LBS I mentioned this stuff and the owner brought out a kit he had buried in the back for ages. He said here, you can have it. Might have been a sample that was never used. I asked him what it was called and he said he had no idea. ChatGPT to the rescue. Found out it is made by Fisik and just called Bar Gel.
So here we go...
I was nervous about trying with the very unstretchy leather wrap, so I did a few dry runs before unleashing the adhesive backing. The nice part was the bar gel is sticky enough to keep the wrap in place, but yet it peels right off. Here is the first test wrap:
Well nothing ventured...
I like it a lot...
I think I'll reinforce the bar ends with twine wrap.
