I also cannot Z1/2 long steepish climbs on a steel bike with an easiest gear of 42x21, e.g.,

So, OK, if I feel like I am about to die, I do not really need a heart monitor to tell me that.
The worst part is that I have a 60+ year old colleague who is more adamant about sugar than me, and he has humbled me in a climb. My only comfort is that he used to be an ex-racer and rides a carbon TIME bike (and that it was many months ago).
The point is that your subjective view of effort doesn't reveal what your actual effort was relative to your aerobic capacity. This may all work for you, but it reinforces that your experience, such as it is, is not in any way a guide for anybody else.
You might be surprised what you can learn with a heart rate monitor. If you actually care about fitness and performance (and one wonders why you are in this subforum if you don't), you might consider doing things where you could learn something.
