Why do you say that, you ask?
I broke my rear shift cable last weekend. It broke off inside the shifter. So I'm 15 miles from the truck with one gear. Well two gears actually with two rings up front but not a lot of down hills so essentially only one.
Three miles from the truck the chain comes off because it's loose without cable tension and being on the smallest cog, and all that jazz. The chain tangled in the rear and well the result was:
Snapped in half rear derailleur.
Front derailleur sheared off (riveted onto tube)
Derailleur hanger bent and threads boogered up when derailleur snapped.
Chain wrapped up and jammed in and behind cassette.
Rear wheel jerked out of skewer locks and warped
Of course, broken shift cable
Thankfully I was grinding uphill at slow speed and got stopped.
Unknown at this time if any micro cracks in carbon, but multiple LBS didn't want to rivet the front derailleur back on. They all hemmed and hawed and decided they "couldn't rivet it back correctly. It's 4 rivets & pretty simple. I get it though, fear of liability and such considering it's a 10 yo carbon frame. I DID rivet it back on and everything sounds, feels and appears solid.

Don't do like me, Keep up your maintenance guys.
years ago I had a Gore Ride-On cable set - a great system from the makers of Gore-Tex. It had an elaborate set of gaskets and gaiters that prevented road crud- and water incursion into the housing, so the shifting ran perfectly with essentially no maintenance for ~10 years. I finally replaced them because I felt I should, rather than because they were failing. These days I replace the rear shift cable annually because it tend to fray at the shifter (Chorus 10sp) - it usually lets me know it’s time because stray strands poke out from under the hoods and stick my fingers 😟
