If the ball bearings are in cages, one possible error is putting the cages in backwards. Try fitting one bearing cage both ways over the spindle before assembling it all. It will be obvious which way it is meant to be.
I usually dispense with the cages and use new loose ball bearings. It takes more time to put it all together, but you end up with new bearings and more of them. Like you, I have sometimes tried the old BB setup and then opted for a new cartridge type, after measuring the old spindle and assaying the chainline, in case a little longer or shorter right side is desirable (or necessary due to what's available.)
I remember getting mixed up over which way round the cages went so I think that is probably what I did wrong. Never mind, noted for the next time. The 18" spanner arrived (massive thing lol) but job done! The drive side is out.
I'm about to order a new chain, sealed BB and rear freewheel to complete the project. Can someone advise - the freewheel is 14T - 28T - 6. Do you need an exact replacement or can you put in more teeth or a 7 speed etc. Are they interchangeable?
Also, on BB size, I'm getting x4 size options. What's the best way to know what size to go for? 68 x 122.5 . 68 x 177.5. 68 x 113. 68 x 110
