Direct drive, from a steam engine? I know zip about the torque curve of a steam engine or anything related to coupling reciprocating energy to a rotational system but it all seems ... unwieldy. Not remotely compatible with standard bicycle/tricycle power trains. This may be the reason that small (tiny) gas turbine or even jet engines are used for projects like these.
