That's certainly my way of thinking, but I've seen arguments in the mtb world for wide tires on narrow rims.
My Specialized bike came with 2.2" knobbies on 19mm rims which is pretty common I believe.
I've been running 50mm road tires on these 19mm rims for the last 15 years, no problems, but I'm going to 25mm rims for my next wheels, same tires, in accordance with Velocity's recommendations.
