Riding across the Midwest - ACA's express vs direct routing

If all goes according to plan, I'll ride from Quebec to Provo next May-June. Routing algorithms (Google Maps, cycle.travel, in blue) would suggest a fairly direct Chicago-Provo route. OTOH, ACA's routes would suggest riding the Express connector (in green).

Riding the Eastern express would add something like 200 miles but is arguably a better route (a blurb somewhere says that it strings together several rail-to-trail, including the Katy), whereas direct routing involves a long stretch of nothingness (western Nebraska and south Wyoming) where finding supplies might be a challenge.

I have not yet looked at the details. No strong preference for now. If you are familiar with either route and want to share opinions, I'll read with interest. (click here for an interactive map)

Easter Express (south) or standard routing (north)?
