Yesterday I did a ride on a 2x11 that included two ten mile climbs up to 1400 ft, one from sea level the other from 600 ft. Last time I did that ride was on my fixie. Geared was easier and faster, and the descents even more so. But which was better? Shrug. 1x1 is inexplicably more fun. Anything more is faster and easier.
