There is a lot of sand where I am and it tends to get lodged between the brake pad and rim which causes shards of aluminum from the rim to become imbedded in the brake pads. This tends to happen more often after riding in the rain. I use a pick to remove the aluminum shards from the pads, then I lightly file the pad surface and use isopropyl alcohol to clean rims.
