This scrubbing reminded me of the spoke comment above and it turns out I couldn't be more wrong! The front hub spoke markings are 5 pointed stars!
Rear hub has a at least two different types of spokes, which is explained by the hub being dished for a freewheel.
Non drive side spoke heads are the same as the front hub.
Drive side spoke heads are mostly X markings.
Not sure when I'll get to clear coating the frame, but I'll get there.

Something way back in my often-corrupted memory files suggests that the X marking is Torrington. I built quite a few wheels with Torrington spokes five decades ago.
