you were on the right track when you mention the screwdriver... push the staple/thorn/rivet/ screw/glass shard out.

i once bought a fairly nice GT avalanche for either 25 or 40 bucks... the guy said it was "Cursed".. he kept having flat tires on the way to the local 7-11... as i left, i noted a long line of Hawthorne Trees along the road...

got home, removed the rear tire, and carefully ran a hand along the inside of the tire.... i ended up removing over a dozen thorns from that tire, and at least 5 more from the front....
every one of them had to be pushed out, or pushed through....
other than those thorns, the bike was in decent condition, and sold easily.
