My question is how could I have handled this better on the road? I don't carry any kind of pliers, never mind a precision pair that can grab a tiny bit of wire. I suppose I could have averted this particular problem by wedging the screwdriver end of my multi-tool under the bent staple to get a better pull, but you don't always have even that to work with.
